NEWS PAGE & BLOG

Hello one and all and welcome to my news page. Here you can see me as my two alter egos the ever efficient secretary Prudie Jones, Evette the Spivette and plain old little me as you catch up with all that is current in my world. Regrettably unlike Prudie my spelling is quite frightful at the best of times due to my dyslexia so I shall apologise now for anything which might be shamefully mis-spelt. In the mean time I hope you find this page fun, entertaining and informative and become a regular visitor to my site.

Who is Billy Howard?

Can anyone help? I’m just back from attending my dear friend Glynn’s funeral in Manchester only to find a message on the answer phone from a Billy Howard wondering why I haven’t replied to his Sunday night e-mail. I’ve been all through my e-mails and I don’t have anything from a Billy Howard. He sounded a bit cross on the phone but didn’t leave his phone number or tell me what his e-mail was about so I can’t contact him. Can anyone tell me who this gentleman is and is he enquiring about a show? If you read this Billy please call me on my mobile Tel 07855 014764 or if you do ring the house phone leave your telephone number so I can get back to you.

Off to Chatham,Salute to the 40s, Photos & Back on Air!

These last few weeks have been non stop and this week I have been working flat out prepping for Chatham and working towards the “Salute to the 40s” event. This year Chatham is pulling out all the stops and any-one who is anyone will be there. They have non stop entertainment and this year I shall be hosting and compering the Spitfire Stage in Museum Square with my friend Madeline Brown. I shall also be performing 3 shows daily and launching my new GI Jive Show so I hope you can all make it along – Check out the link for details www.thedockyard.co.uk/salutetothe40s
I have some great shows planed which will run as follows
Saturday 10.40am – 11.10am WRNS Show 1.20pm – 1.50pm “Hooray for Hollywood” 2.50pm -3.20pm “GI Jive Show + 4pm – 4.15pm Lindy Hop Show with the Cinque Ports and the finale which will take us up to 5pm. On Sunday I shall be opening with my US WAVES Show at 10.40 am – 11.10 am.Pearly Queen Show at 1.20pm – 1.50 pm and then my WAAF show to finish off with at 2.50pm – 3.20pm. I shall be working with The Cinque Ports at 4.00 pm taking us through to the finally- so it will be all systems go and I hope you can all make it along.
What’s rather special about this year is Chatham is the only 1940s event to have successfully pulled off having Lola Lamour, Madeline Brown and myself  all together at once on the billing. We are widely recognised as the top three and no other event has ever been able to do that so Chatham is really leading the way here. You can also see The Polka Dot Dolls, Victoria Yellop, Natasha Harper and Mickie Driver + my good friends the The Puttin’ on the Blitz Boys so a fantastic line up! I also have some fabulous new outfits to wear so can’t wait!
Although we are all doing the 40s it’s going to be a bit mad and very Rock and Roll. The Blitz Boys have been booked to play Hednas Vintage Night Club in Milton Keynes Saturday night and they have invited me along. My friend Paul has offered to drive me so there is going to be a real gang of us coming up from Chatham. It’s going to be a bit tight so I may well have to stay in costume and ditch my evening gown for my Evette the Spivette trouser suit. But what ever I wear it will be great to hear the Blitz boys sing and be back at Hednas again!

Me at Secklow Sounds!

Today I have been rushing around as ever and I was back in the studio doing an interview on the Charles Haigh radio show this morning. Tomorrow I will be in Manchester and Thursday is just crazy. I have a dress fitting at 9.15am a music rehearsal at 10.15am in Bletchly. Then I head off to Dunstable to pick up my new SM beater radio mike. A show in Luton at 2pm before dashing back to Leighton Buzzard to be in the hair dresses for 4.15pm. Mad or What!
Friday I head off to Chatham so it really has been non-stop. In the mean time do check out my photos on my facebook fan page. Dave very kindly sent me the disk today of the Shuttleworth shoot and there are some really lovely ones there. Angela has also been e-mailing me the photos from the Earsham Hall shoot and when I get back from Chatham I will start to putting  them up on Facebook for you all to see

A Voice in a Million sings from Opera to Rock and Roll!

Behind the scenes of Cobbles to Rock!

This weekend I have been working really hard having sung my way through a 100 years of music from Opera to Rock and Roll. It was Leighton Buzzard’s Conservative Club’s centenary and I was booked Saturday night to perform my “From Cobbles to Rock” theatre show for their champagne reception. I first developed the Cobbles show back in 1999 for the run up to the Millennium and then went on a theatre tour with the show in 2000. So it was rather nice to perform the show again having not done so for over a year. It is a full production show and tells the story of a 100 years of music and involes12 costume changes as each decade is linked with narration. In some cases I have only 12 seconds between each number to change costume and it’s a big sing too. In this show I sing everything from Abba to Puccini and it’s the show that earned me the title “A Voice in a Million” so I’m very proud of it. On this occasion I had the pleasure of working with sound engineer Andy Poulton who did a fantastic job so thank-you Andy it was great to work with you and I hope we can work together again soon. Your mix of Mamma Mia was just spot on!

Sound engineer Andy!

Thank-you to Caroline too who invited me to the club and I’m so pleased your members enjoyed the show. It’s very different and very theatrical but then that’s me all over and any excuse to dress up. Mind you I notice a few of the costumes are now a little on the big side as I’ve lost weight so if I ever get booked to do the show again I need to have the odd one or two taken in.
After last nights show I had a very quick turn around and I was back on the road again this morning singing for the Houghton Regis Vintage Car show. I was booked to do 3 x 45 minute shows daily and after seeing the weather fore cast I was a bit worried so I made sure I took my mack!

Me on a Scooter at the Vintage Car Show!

With it being a Vintage Car show I was booked to do a mix of periods from “We’ll Meet Again” ATS to the swinging 1950s and 60s with a Big Band and Swing Hollywood set in the middle. Despite the awful weather fore cast I’m pleased to say there was a good turn out of vichels even though it was clear from the start the event was going to finish a little earlier than sheduled. All things considered we were quite lucky with the weather and for the most part the rain did keep off despite it being a little chilly. I feel rather proud of myself because I set up my big rig and mixed it myself today so I was really pleased with my sound. They did have a sound engineer and system for announcements but sometimes it’s best to use your own rig because you know the sound you want and I do love my Ev speakers – they are the best!
Despite it being a bit of a cold damp day I really enjoyed myself and after all the vichels had left I put on a bit of a Rock and Roll show for all the organisers. It was great to see all the day glow jackets up and dancing on the green and a big thank-you to Tim who helped me put up my speakers this morning. It was great to work with you and here’s to the next one!
Tomorrow I have lots of lose ends to tie up and a dress fitting in prep for “Salute to the 40s” so I’m looking forward to heading off to Chatham this weekend as I have some great shows planed.
Well must dash as I have lots of costumes to sort out and put away. Thanks for following
Keep Watching and Toodle Pip!

Chicksands, From Cobbles to Rock and Vintage Cars!

Me as a WW2 Plotter!

I’m just back from performing for the Officers Mess’s Battle of Britain dinner at Chicksands not far from Shefford. It was my first time to Chicksands and the Offices Mess was once a Priory dating back to the late 12 century. I love history and the Chicksands Priory is a Grade 1 listed building with some wonderful Gothic architecture. The Chicksands Priory was founded for the Gibertines in 1154 and the Gilbertines were the only monastic order created in Britain and confined to Britain. In 1939 it became a Royal Air Force Signals Station and in 1941 it served as a communications centre and as an intercept facility for Bletchley Park. So as you can imagine I was thrilled to be booked to sing there.
I’ve done loads of Mess dinners in the past but each one is a little different. On this occasion I was booked to sing for an hour in the bar at 10.30pm after all the offices had finished dinning. At Chicksands it’s not just home to the RAF but to the Army and Navy too and I have to say all the officers looked very smart in their regimental colours. I don’t think I have ever been in a room with so many tall men!

Chicksands Gothic Architecture!

Mind you they can get a little high spirited but nothing we couldn’t handle and one officer recognised me from The Chaps Ball I attended in London last year. He and his friend then wanted to teach me how to throw a right hook and how to slap a man with maximine effect. Education is never a waist and one never knows when a skill like that might come in useful. I guess if you want to learn how to fight you might as well learn from the Royal Marines! Men sort of know how to fight naturally and now I know where to tuck my thumb and what part of the jaw to amie for should one ever be placed in such a situation!
It’s amazing the people I meet on my travels and the skills they wish to pass on!
Well I’m all set for Saturdays “From Cobbles to Rock” show a 100 years of Music and Costume and I really must have another look at my words tomorrow. There are the odd one or two songs I’ve not sung in a while where I need to refresh my memory. So I need to set some time aside to rehearse. Don’t forget you can catch me on Sunday at Roughton Regis’s Vintage car show on the green. It’s free and I shall be performing 3 x 45 minute shows daily. I shall be on at 11.30 am with my ATS “We’ll Meet Again” show 1.30pm “In the Mood” an American Glamour show and at 3pm with my “Swinging 1950s and 60s” show. Sadly the weather fore cast doesn’t look good but the show must go on what ever the weather I hope you can all make it along. I will be bringing my mack!
Gosh look at the time – so bed now I think! Next week is all set to be another busy week with the run up to “Salute to the 40s” in Chatham but more of that later.
Toodle Pip, Thanks for following  and Bye for Now!
