Singing for London Poppy Day!

I’m thrilled to be able to tell you that we have at last got the totals in. London Poppy Day raised over a million pounds £1,017,000.00 on the day and we at Euston station collected £22,614.72. for the Royal British Legion. That’s a whopping 11% increase on last year. This is a phenomenal result and thank-you every-one for your amazing support. I felt very proud to be singing from 8am – 6pm, 30 minutes on 30 minutes off alongside the Poppy collectors at Euston station, raising money for this well worthy charity.

This was the 2nd time I had been invited to sing for London Poppy Day. Last year I was placed at London Bridge but this time I was requested to cover Euston station which is much easier for me to get to when driving down from Leighton Buzzard. I’m no stranger to these sorts of events having played Birmingham Poppy Day many times before. The time goes really quickly and afterward I worked out I sang for five and a half hours covering 134 songs

All Set for Christmas!

including my medley compositions.

It’s all about pacing and maybe it is true what they say you don’t get older you just get better. Now I’m in my fifties my voice is in its prime. I can go for longer and not think about it. I have a naturally high soprano voice which sounds young while enjoying the benefits of maturity. Last year I had my Covid jab a few days before which was a little like singing though a cold. This year I took the decision to delay my jab until today which proved to be the right decision so I was able to give my all for London.

As with all these things I don’t have much time to rest and straight afterwards I had a full diary of 1940s ATS Remembrance shows which I played through to the 18th November. With the King’s Birthday on the 14th November I had one “Happy and Glorious” concert to complete and now

Plenty of Christmas Music to Learn!

it’s full steam ahead with the Christmas season.

Sadly I can’t spend too long on my blog today because I start Christmas shows on the 29th November and I have a series of new songs to learn for this season. Shrewdly I picked up my new songs from the studio in January as this time of year is always extremely busy. Richards arrangements are second to none and it means a lot to have them. I’m looking forward very much to adding them into my repertoire.

American musical “Mame”, A fabulous gospel arrangement of “O Holy Night”, “Let it Snow” which replaces my original track, a medley of “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” with “Carol of the Bells” which I used as the backing track to my Black Country Living Museum Christmas Flicker Book video. I will be officially launching this video in  a few weeks time so keep watching this space and finally the “Candlelight Carol” which was written by John Rutter and is just beautiful.

Next week we are having all our windows replaced so I need to get on with my word learning and Christmas show plans. On the 3rd December I’m engaged to perform for the Jambusters Vintage Christmas Fair which will be taking place at Woburn Village Hall from 11am. I’m booked to perform 2 x 45 minute Christmas sets at 11.30am and 2pm. I’m looking forward to the event very much and I hope I will be able to do some Christmas shopping at the same time too.

On Stage at Euston Station!

I’m sorry I’m a little later than normal with my blog this week. As you might expect I haven’t had a great deal of time to myself having performed seamlessly through the months of October and November with Halloween, Guy Fawkes shows and straight on into Remembrance season. As ever I’m constantly learning new music and it was great to open my Guy Fawkes shows last week with Elvis’s popular tune “Burning Love”.

This week I’ve swapped my flaming dresses for ATS uniform. I’ve a full diary of “We’ll Meet Again” Remembrance shows to perform which will be taking me through to the best part of next week and I’m now performing two shows daily up until the 12th November. I have an enormous repertoire and I’m always making musical changes to keep my shows fresh and exciting. This year I’ve been performing The Band of Brothers

Singing for The Poppy Appeal!

Good show programing is essential and I usually perform this number after the 2 minutes silence on remembrance day itself which is a lovely way of opening my show. For now I’ve been placing “Requiem” as the penultimate number which sits well in my show planning before it will be taking its proper place again for Remembrance day.

Collecting for the Appeal!

Last Thursday I was at Euston Station performing for London Poppy Day. Last year I was at London Bridge and at New Street Station in Birmingham too. This year the Appeal concentrated on London and I was placed at Euston which is much easier for me to get to. I had been booked to perform from 8am in the morning through to 6pm at night 20 minutes on 20 minutes off all through the day. It’s a big sing but very enjoyable as I performed a mixed repertoire of Opera to Rock and Roll, not to mention all those popular sing-along favourites from the 1940s, which people

This year it was much easier because I had a clock right in front of me and in the end I simplified my sets by performing 30 minutes on 30 minutes off which seemed to work better with the trains. I first started singing for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal in 2018  in Birmingham and I now have these Poppy days off to a fine art.

I usually play my first show as a straight through 60 minutes set from 8am to 9am and then every 30 minutes on the half hour.  I find this works

well so in effect I’m only singing for five and a half hours which seems to go very quickly. The hardest part isn’t the singing but the standing which is why I always bring a couple of pairs of shoes. On this occasion I only needed two pairs, one flat pair for hauling equipment and setting up and the other, a smart pair of heels because they always look so much more glamorous when on stage.

As yet I’m still waiting to hear just how much we raised on the day. I know over £15000 was raised on credit card machines alone but just how much was taken in cash donations I’m still waiting to hear back but as soon as I do I will let you all know.

This week has been very full on with shows every day and on Tuesday I was booked to perform for the Royal Star and Garter in High Wycombe. Just down the road is The Air Raid

Tea in the Air Raid Shelter!

Shelter Cafe and Tea Rooms. I’d been wanting to visit for a long time as it’s just changed premises to Frogmore Street. It’s a little like a 1940s museum with lots of artifacts from the war. My show wasn’t until 4pm on Tuesday so I made the most of the opportunity, called in for lunch and enjoyed the war time ambience.

All Set for The Royal Star and Garter!

I’m afraid it’s just a very quick blog today as I’m rushing against the clock. As you might expect I’ve been out every day this past week performing Halloween shows and things are really starting to ramp up as we get closer to Halloween and the 31st October. My new songs are going down a teat, or should I say “trick or treat” especially my Postmodern arrangement of “Wuthering Heights” which fits perfectly within my Halloween show mix.

On the 1st November I’ll be changing to Guy Fawkes shows and adding in the classic  Josef Locke number “Blazeaway” along with “Burning Love” which is another popular Elvis tune. I already have “Devil in Disguise” which goes down well but perhaps surprisingly one of my favourite songs from this set list, is “Spooky”. It’s really groovy and to my mind wouldn’t seem out of place in a Scooby Doo cartoon.

working at London Bridge and Birmingham New Street Station as I covered the Midlands as well. This year the event is focusing around London and I will be singing at Euston station from 8am – 6pm, 20 minutes on 20 minutes off all through the day.  It’s a big sing but very enjoyable and the time always seems to fly by.

I’ve been booked to sing music from WWI through to the 1970s plus I will be including a few of my new postmodern tracks this year too. I have to get there for 6am which gives me time to park up and unload. When it’s London you have to allow for extra time because anything can happen

I’m going to be placed in the centre of the station next to the poppy stall and I’m keeping my fingers crossed I will have a wind break with the pillar behind me. It’s easy to underestimate the wind rush of commuters as they walk back and forth to and from the station platforms. Over time it can cause a chill down your back so I need to make sure I wear extra clothes under my dress for added warmth and I have at least 3 pairs of

Meeting Up with the WI at Avoncroft Open Air Museum!

It was with great pleasure I was able to launch my new flicker book show-reel this week, “I’ve heard that Song Before”. It features photos from my Summer performance at Bletchley Park when I performed my WAAF show “Straighten up and Fly Right” as part of their Concert Series. All the shots were taken by photographer Harry Purdom and last Monday I was working with Peter my web-designer on the video. I’m very proud of the way we were able to get the show-reel finished, uploaded and out on You Tube so quickly. It’s a wonderful memento of the day and I’m very proud of it.

Last Sunday I had a lovely day out at Avoncroft Open Air Museum in Worcestershire. I met up with my friend Robert and we made the most of the beautiful Autumn sunshine. It was the

museum’s 1940s event and the last time I’d been there must have been over 40 years ago when I visited on a school trip. Much of it still looks very  similar to the way I remember it with it’s timber frame buildings and windmill. Although with the Autumnal drop in the temperature we were both very pleased to see the tea rooms open which they weren’t when I last visited all those years ago.

With Halloween starting for me on the 23rd it’s scary to think Christmas is just around the corner. In a week or two’s time we are having our window replaced. It’s a job which is long overdue and I know it will be worth it when it’s all done but I’m not looking forward to the cold and being in a house without windows no matter how quickly they fit them. Meeting Up with the 1940s Reenactors!

Off on the Road Again!

It’s been a productive week where I’ve been able to tie off a lot of loose ends while still performing every day. I’ve had a couple of breakthroughs on a few of my songs this week which have taken me a little longer than normal to learn. It can go like that with song learning sometimes where you get a mental block with a phrase and then as if my magic all the hard work and persistence pays off and everything falls into place.

On Stage at Danny House!

It was great to get away and play the south coast last week as I opened on Monday night at one of my favourite venues, Danny House. It’s always a pleasure to play in the Great Hall and on this occasion I had been booked to perform my “Hooray for Hollywood” show.  I’m constantly adding new numbers into my repertoire and on this occasion I was able to include the classic Dolly Parton number “Nine to Five” and my favourite James Bond theme, “Nobody Does it Better”. Both songs went down extremely well with the audience along with my Judy Garland and Movie musical favourites. So perhaps it wont come as any surprise to read I’m looking forward to returning to Danny House with my New Years Day concert on the 1st January 2024 immensely.

always guaranteed a wonderful reception and an appreciative audience but afterwards I enjoy the quiet time when I can retire to my room. I have so many shows going around in my head at any-one time it’s great to have some quiet time to myself. I often spend the time going over songs so I’m ready for my next performance.

The following day I traveled along the coast and I had the pleasure of staying with Paul and Poppy in Portsmouth. On Tuesday my show was in Fishbourne where I performed the “Swinging

I had a busy run of shows last week but on Saturday we decided to treat ourselves to a day out and we enjoyed high tea at The Ivy restaurant in the center of Chichester while making the most of the Autumn sunshine. Days off are very few and far between and it’s a real

Poppy is 14 now and she tires quickly. Often when we go out for walks she’s slow to get going and speeds up when we turn around to go home. She likes to sleep in her basket more so we have to be respectful of her age which I’m not sure how that works out in dog years.

I’m currently learning “Wuthering Heights” and I’m going to be including this into my Halloween show later this month and “Gangsters Paradise” which will spice up my 1920s & 30s show no end. I’ve always had a keen interest in musical arrangements which is why I value my musical arranger Richard Whennel so highly. The wow wow trumpers in “Gangsters Paradise” give it a wonderful 1920s feel and I’m looking forward very much to performing the number very soon.

Shopping in Chichester!

On Stage With Paul and Poppy!

I’m afraid I’m in something of a dash tonight. I’m busy packing as I head off tomorrow morning on a mini five day tour along the south coast. I’m opening Monday night in Hurstierpoint at Danny House, a beautiful Tudor mansion with my “Hooray for Hollywood” show before making my way along the south coast to Fishbourne, Chichester and finishing in Farnham. I’ve a busy week ahead of me and I need to make sure I’ve packed everything I need and I have all the right costumes.

I’ve been performing every-day this week so I haven’t had much time to be in the office, which is why I’m in such a dash now to get everything done before I go away. Last weekend Paul and I had the pleasure of performing for Rob Bailey’s Birthday party in

Wheathampstead. We had been booked to perform songs from the 1950s, 60s and 70s and Paul delighted the party audience with his Sinatra classics. I sang everything else from Cliff Richard, Abba, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield to Chuck Berry and we finished our sets with “Come Fly with Me” and “Thank-you for the Music”.

These last few years have been very intense and I don’t get many days off. If I’m not on stage performing, or travelling from A to B, I’m usually working late in the office catching up on paperwork. I don’t get much down town but today was a little different. It was one of those rare days where I was able to enjoy some free time which coincided with Bletchley Parks 1940s weekend.

Rob is very new to the 1940s scene and he asked if I could accompany him to Bletchley Park as his fashion advisor and help him choose a 1940s civilian outfit. At 23 Rob has youth on his side and a fantastic figure which means he can get into all those wonderful vintage suits which the rest of us can only dream about. It can take time finding the right out-fit but when you are tall and slim like Rob that task is made considerably easier. Today we had a terrific time shopping for vintage and by the end of the day Rob was certainly turning heads as he invested in an original Donegal tweed suit which he was able to purchase from Andrew

Incase you don’t know unlike Harris tweed, Donegal tweed is made using traditional hand-weaving techniques and is made from high-quality wool. It’s flecked with different colours to give the tweed a distinctive look and it was very popular during the 1940s for its versatility and durability. Rob was also able to pick up a vintage tie and Fedora which will be a good investment. I too was able to find a beautiful red 1940s coat which I will be wearing for one of my Christmas shows later this year.

Shopping for Vintage Fashion!

Off on a WSR Adventure!

It’s been an astonishing week where my feet haven’t touched the ground. I’ve performed 19 shows in 14 days, been to West Somerset and back and I’m completely fully booked through to next week too. This week I’ve been busy performing Battle of Britain shows and I’m pleased the weather has started to cool a little. It’s not much fun having to perform in uniforms made of barathea while everyone else is wearing cool cottons. Fortunately I have glamour alternatives which have proved to be invaluable this week but now I’m back performing in full RAF, WAAF uniform as I fly through to the end of the week with Battle of Britain shows.

I confess I’ve had a lot of late nights and early mornings but it’s good to be busy and today is Battle of Britain day. I’m getting ready for my first show of the day which will be taking place in Oxford and then I’m over to Luton for the evening.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of performing for the West Somerset Railways 1940s event. It was my first time there and I had been booked to perform at Bishops Lydeard which is at the start of the line. Apparently WSR is the longest standard gauge independent heritage railway in the United Kingdom. It operates just over 20.5 miles between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard and I was the first act of the day opening at 9.30am.

All my shows are different  and 99% of the tracks I use are bespoke musical arrangements. I’ve been in showbusiness for over 30 years and it’s true what they say you don’t get older you just get better and you have to be ready for every eventuality. If you fail to prepare you prepare to fail and it’s important to have all the equipment you need and not rely on others.

plus a commando plug which proved to be essential items at Bishops Lydeard. Not every artist would think to equip themselves with a commando plug but I first needed one when I performed for the Isle of Wight Steam railway’s Victorian event  many years ago and I’ve been carrying one ever since along with continental plug adapters which I use when I perform abroad.

because you can’t afford to leave things to chance. There’s always a lot to do first thing in the morning and you haven’t got time to mess about and waste people’s time. My get in time was 8am which on the face of it seems really early but once you start lifting equipment and carrying in costumes it’s amazing where the time goes. An important part of any performance is social media and I always try and film a quick short for facebook which keeps things fresh and exciting.

to see the event. It was only by chance he was there but thanks to his help and youthful strength we were able to share the load which made the setting up considerably easier. Being taller and by working together Rob was even able to decorate my gazebo with bunting which made the stage look pretty for visitors.

West Somerset Railways 1940s weekend is a big event and they have artists working at various stations up and down the line. The baulk of the event is focused around Minehead and Watchet

Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree!

which is where most of the artist are billetted for the weekend. Minehead is over 20 miles away from Bishops Lydeard and the railway very kindly booked me into the Lethbrdge Arms which is ideally situated for  the station.

The Lethbridge Arms has recently been taken over and sadly they no longer serve breakfast. When you are working hard and to a tight schedule this can be tricky especially as I’m a type one diabetic. I inject 6 times a day with insulin and I have to be extremely organised. I can’t take risks and go with-out food especially first thing in the morning.  Fortunately Rob had found another B&B in the village called The Mount where I was able to book myself in for a 7.15 am breakfast. This was literally a life saver. I had brought extra food with me but because of the extreme heat and no fridges in the rooms all the food I bought ended up going off and rancid.

In many ways I was very lucky  because not all the rooms at the Lethbridge have en-suite. When I left the hotel in the morning there were people queuing in the corridor to use the loo and another queue for the bathroom so I was very lucky indeed to at least have a loo and shower. The lady very kindly allowed me to stay in my room for two consecutive nights but initially she would have expected me to move to a room with-out an en-suite. I think when she saw my luggage and understood that I’m a costume artist and I wouldn’t be around to move my things, she took pity on me and allowed me to keep my room. Phew!

I always try and do my very, very best for clients and cover every angle. Show business is a tough life and it’s not for the faint hearted. Last weekend the weather was extremely hot and I thought it wise to bring some glamour costume alternatives for my US WAC and WAAF shows. This proved to be a good call because by the afternoon temperatures sored.

Whatever the weather the show must go on and thank goodness for my little gazebo which event organiser Robin Wichard very kindly put up for me on the Friday evening.

I had come prepared to perform a show for the Saturday evening but as it happens I was given the night off so Rob and I decided to attend the Saturday Night dance at Minehead Station. with fellow artists May Blossom, The Liberty Sisters, Winston Churchill and Johnny Victory. I last worked with Johnny at Sherringham Station in 2012 for the North Norfolk Railway so it was good to catch up.

Come Sunday we had a sprinkling of rain first thing in the morning but it soon cleared and it was business as usual as I continued to perform 3 costume shows. I always like to open with a uniform show because I very rarely have time to change and it’s easier to set up in flat shoes than heels.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Rob for his amazing help and all the staff and volunteers at the WSR and Bishops Lydeard for their hospitality and kindness. I’d also like to thank Robin and his family for recommending me, with a special tip of the hat to Lee for allowing me to use his office as a changing room. It was a pleasure to sing for you all.

Tomorrow I’m in Wheathampstead performing for Rob’s Birthday Party which is promising to be an amazing afternoon. Last night I was finishing off my show plans and Paul Marsden will be joining me on stage as we perform popular tunes from the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
